Being a bit of a tech geek, I was quick to give my new DISH Network ViP622 DVR a close examination after it had been installed. The presence of an Ethernet port on the rear of the unit was a clear indication that DISH had plans for their DVRs that they had not started talking about yet. At least not that I had heard at the time.

I probably had my DVR for a year or so before the company released the news that customers could now connect their DVRs to the internet and start taking advantage of the new features this change enabled.

Although the expanded on-demand offerings are a nice improvement, my favorite new feature is the ability to access my DVR from any computer connected to the internet. That also includes many of the mobile devices that have become so popular in recent years. Although I don’t travel enough to justify the purchase of a mobile device with internet capability, I did once use my son’s iPhone to access my DVR and set it to record a program while traveling down the road in my car (not while driving, of course!). We had left the house earlier without remembering to set the DVR, so the new remote access feature saved the day.

When you access your DVR via the internet, you can do just about anything you can do with it while you are sitting in front of it with remote in hand. You can set up programs to record, review the programs you have recorded, delete programs that have been recorded, and with the addition of some optional equipment you can even watch programming from your DVR as well.

I’m sure were likely to see more useful features added to DISH Network equipment in the future that will further the relationship that is evolving between home entertainment and the internet.
