Ethanol Facts

1. The benefits you can get by using ethanol fuel are many. It is a renewable fuel and as the name suggests, renewable fuel is one that in abundant supply because the ingredients from which it is produced is just as abundant. But the major fuel of the present day, crude oil, is a limited resource and if we do not use it frugally, we may not have sufficient amounts of it in the future. Hence there is a strong case for switching to renewable fuels and especially ethanol, because the crops from which ethanol is produced can be grown every year.
2. The two major threats of the present day world, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, are taken care of if you use ethanol. With more percentage of oxygen in it, ethanol burns more completely and hence its contribution to global warming is manageable. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by 46% if ethanol is used. An addition of 10% ethanol to gas tanks can lead to a reduction of 19% of greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Ethanol does not pollute water because of its unique nature of disintegrating when mixed with water. This chemical quality makes it biodegradable and ground water is safer from pollution.
4. The cost of producing ethanol is another advantage in its favor because the cost of producing gasoline is much more. Shifting to ethanol can dramatically save us millions of gallons of gasoline.
5. Contemporary vehicles can use ethanol fuel safely, present distribution networks can supply ethanol as well, and the existing technology has been proven to be compatible with the use of ethanol. A blended mixture of gasoline and ethanol can fuel almost all existing vehicles, even those considered as hybrids.
6. Since the livelihood of farmers who produce the crops for manufacturing ethanol get boosted with ethanol use, the country also benefits ultimately. Instead of strengthening the financial muscle of foreign oil-producing companies, using ethanol strengthens the economic muscle of the country as a whole.
7. Most of the foreign exchange reserves are drained for importing huge quantities of crude oil from major oil-producing countries and if ethanol and ethanol blends are used, this dependence can be reduced.
8. The main ingredients that are used at present for producing ethanol are corn and sugarcane. Research is being continuously conducted for using almost anything to produce it. Very shortly, it is expected experts will confirm that unusable crop waste can be the ideal ingredient for producing ethanol. If this breakthrough is achieved, it is going to be a landmark achievement that may herald changes in our fuel use on a mammoth scale.
